GOD AGAINST U.S.: ALIEN SPACEMAN JESUS, THE WORLD TRADE CENTER attacks and more Alvin Miller (1986) My second, more recent article: http://www. angelfire. com / crazy / Spaceman / inaugural. html On my site: http://www. angelfire. com / crazy / Spaceman / TABLE OF CONTENTS PREFACE CHAPTER ONE: plausible CALENDAR CHAPTER TWO: A FIRST LOOK AT Norman O. Brown CHAPTER III: THE MESSIAH MEDIA, or search for Jesus TV CHAPTER IV: THE RETURN OF CHRIST ANNEX: The Secret Rapture BIBLIOGRAPHY LIST OF FILMS BY DATE LIST OF FILMS FILM SERIALS PREFACE What do you call a crazy astronaut? – - A Astronut. What follows is an nearly word for word the online version of my booklet © 1986 WEIRD eschatology: an alternative view of the entrance SECOND (ISBN 0-9616435-0-1, Library of Congress Call Number BT823. M55 1986). When you’re finished, you may conclude that this particular interpretation of the particular book of the Apocalypse would be relegated to the teachings of self-appointed cranks, crackpots, prophets of doom and various other assorted fanatics. But perhaps, even your own opinion may be clarified when you read this. The first chapter deals with theology and May will be a small dull, but fasten your seatbelt, as I am becoming more and more weird to come (in terms of interpretation that you’ve seen before). Note that I use texts for untraceable, and most obscure films. Lack of access to these sources should not hinder your understanding of what follows. Also, to emphasize the importance of the issues I deal here apparently, I capitalize on sentences, I argue. CHAPTER ONE CALENDAR PLAUSIBLE Are you a Christian? Do you believe the second coming at a later date? Is it legitimate to construct schedules of these events to come? Such rhetorical questions from the start in May and place you off. A major difficulty is that no consensus as to when and in what order these predicted events must occur. This subject has always been a particular source of schism and controversy. I will propose dates are as many in each generation before me. And as many have been before me, I can be rebutted by the mere passage of time. The majority opinion adopted by most evangelicals is premillennalism pretribulational, I do agree in part with. I would note that some of this view is really based on a historical novelty that only dates back to the nineteenth century. What I mean here is that, in terms of the extremely slow movement of theology (remember that the canon was finalized there are some two thousand years), the majority opinion is a relatively recent innovation. I prefer a distinctly minority position, which is known to many postmillennialism delight. The position postmillennial holds that many of the predictions made in the New Testament, including those of the Olivet discourse (Mt 24, Mk 13, Luke 21), were made at the time of the first Christians, and limit enforcement past events future to be expected. There is a school, represented by, for example, Max and Timothy James King, who wants every prophecy of the entire New Testament was completed during the age of the Church. But , I feel this view neglects a proper consideration of the Apocalypse. Postmillennialism is also sometimes called Preterism, which implies that the text is allowed to speak without exegesis. Thus, when Jesus predicted several times in the UK a generation, I do not write off the statement as an error or an excess of enthusiasm. Instead, I draw up a timetable which shows the UK beginning of a generation after the Crucifixion. Then, when John of Patmos said Millennium starts on that date of commencement of the Kingdom, I go regularly to my table (at the end of this chapter) and set the Thousand Year Clock. It was really a specific date, a generation after the Crucifixion – the turning point of the year 70. It was the historic date of the fall of Jerusalem, which is not a particularly significant date in most mainstream discussions. The date of the first resurrection, in the terminology of John of Patmos, which starts the Millennium. What happened in A. D. 70? After a long siege by the Roman legions, Jerusalem was sacked and razed. In the secular eye, as described by Josephus in the Jewish War in bloody detail, the scene was one of mass destruction that even the temple has been spared. But the spiritual eye, as PAROUSIA Russell showed more than a century ago, these events were the fulfillment of the Olivet Discourse and the return of Jesus and his armies to conquer in the clouds to inaugurate the spiritual reign with the saints and martyrs. Other sources cited in the bibliography which Chilton’s PARADISE RESTORED espouse this view. Chilton designated Jerusalem as the Whore of Babylon and Rome as the Beast. (Note added 2006: In 1986 my schedule that I followed Chilton. I have since reversed my opinion. I now see Rome as the prostitute and Jerusalem as the Beast.) I need to pause a moment to consider the question of the dating of the Apocalypse. The currently accepted date for the appearance of the Book of Apocalypse is AD 95. If the date is right , the realization of the predictions made so far would be a matter of perspective. I recommend the review of John AT Robinson in this issue REDATING THE NEW TESTAMENT. Robinson cites internal and external data to go the date of the Apocalypse, the return schedule of the 70 AD. In addition, he traces the standard AD 95 to back a single source. This source is a statement by Irenaeus that the Apocalypse appeared “to end the reign of Domitian.” This statement is ambiguous and may even be simply incorrect. Other sources cited in the bibliography (including Chilton and James) to accept an earlier date. The Book of the Apocalypse is a significant amplification of the Gospels and Epistles previous. Here the concept of the Millennium is introduced for the first and only time. The timetable presented by John of Patmos extends forward to the day Trial and the future development of the New Jerusalem, thus completing the New Testament Canon. Turning to the Millennium period, lasting approximately a year from 70 to 1070 AD, the starting point was the spiritual event, the parousia, as indicated by Russell and Chilton. But the secular historians looking back at this period as a whole scored it the Dark Ages. More recently, the verdict was tempered by the demonstration of progress and technological developments in the Middle and Far East during these years. But it remains right that, for Western civilization, primarily in Western Europe in those years was an era of unprecedented barbarity and ignorance. In those days the blood of countless martyrs were dumped in the late development of the Roman Empire and the establishment of the Church. Violence was the order of the day and sugarcoating or rose-colored glasses are unnecessary. The First Resurrection is an event of mass destruction and the Kingdom or Millennium has been an era of barbarism. In other words, it is no accident or coincidence that the fulfillment of prophecies are apocalyptic. Instead, it is an vital principle to remember here, since I would note that the trial day will also mass destruction and the New Jerusalem to follow will appear to the uninitiated to the new barbarism. I’ll take these thoughts further in subsequent chapters. Why not start with Day of Reckoning to the year 1070 with the end of the millennium? Historically, many people who lived then did not expect to see the return of the Messiah. I answered instead that it was the date on which Satan was not bound to his season. Here I part company with most of the sources cited in the bibliography. They prefer to see the new millennium as a potentially indefinite period extending thousands of years with Satan loosed his season until shortly before the Second Coming. They see the church again in the millennial period extend and consolidate its gains in the end to convert the world just before Advent. Instead, I maintain that John of Patmos really meant a delay of about a thousand years, Satan has been sowing its evil work. I admit that the season has now lasted nearly a thousand years of its own. One consolation is that this long period is finally on the verge of closing. Satan was very busy with my point of view in recent centuries. Examples of his work would be shameful events like the Renaissance, the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, the Inquisition, the Enlightenment, the industrial revolution until the contemporary mass movements horrible. I could be accused of being a feudal or obscurantist here. But , I do not look back to the United as a striker for the approaching New Jerusalem. At this point I reckon we reached the low point of the curve down to hell, just before the return of the Messiah. Thus, I teach hellfire and damnation, like most right-wing evangelicals who believe premillennial. But as I said, postmillennialists the bibliography, which are uniformly conservative for the most part, much less emphasis on this aspect. I am also in agreement with the premillennialists in respect of the abduction. Historically, the eighteen centuries removal was taken as essentially simultaneous with the Advent. This is broken down by, among others, MacPherson in the hoax Fantastic RAPTURE and Kimball in the rapture: a question of timing. MacPherson demonstrates that the nineteenth century called Scotch seer Margaret MacDonald, in 1830, introduced the Rapture pretribulational – a temporal separation of the Secret Rapture Second Coming. This introduction was a theological novelty or innovation. MacPherson traces the concept was introduced through the figures of the nineteenth century Darby and Scofield to the evangelists consumer electronics today. I said that I accept the multiple Rapture view, which is a variant of Rapture pretribulational. I agree, based on the work of my sources, that this view has its origin only in the nineteenth century. I’ll clarify why I hold this view in the latter part of Chapter III. I must emphasize that because I take a preterist perspective, I place less emphasis on seeing the events that took place with the first resurrection exactly duplicated on the Day of Reckoning. For example, Nero was clearly the Antichrist for AD 70, but I do not necessarily expect to see a new Antichrist before the Second Coming. If forced, we can choose among candidates of the twentieth century, many for this article. Similarly, I do not expect to see upcoming events occurring in the Jerusalem real this time. I predict that in chapter four, they will most likely start in one of the advanced Western nations. Beginning with the next chapter, I will use the sources, apparently incongruous, such as sources of the left wing of the sixties. I’ll dive in movies and media in general. The sources I will place in place are relevant to the issues of this chapter. So far I have outlined a plausible vision but not the mainstream of Christian eschatology. From this point forward, as promised, expect the point of view presented as “bizarre.” CHAPTER TWO A FIRST LOOK AT Norman O. Brown It is a tale Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury Signifying nothing. -Shakespeare There is a excellent possibility that you’ve never heard of Norman O. Brown or meet one of his writings. His books are now a generation ancient , and partly exhausted. Perhaps some of the issues he raised have become moot with the passage of time. I reckon when its books originally released Brown was taken simply as a sexual radical. I only say here in the sense that Brown is not being discussed so I felt it was just what he did. A superficial reading of his enigmatic, aphoristic style gives this impression. But , the real subject of two of his books, BODY Like (1966) and Closing Time (1973) was religion. Of the two books, Closing Time is now exhausted, but necessary to get a complete picture. With these two books Brown had really solved the mysteries of religion. Am I argue here that if you know these books, you will have all your questions on religion? Yes, it’s really what I claim. Brown did get all the way inside the sanctuary. If you are able to solve puzzles Brown, you will simultaneously solve the mysteries of religion. I say this fully aware that Brown’s erudition makes this monumental task. If I have piqued your curiosity, and you choose to take a look at Brown, the best procedure would be to consider other sources first. Everything is there in the Brown case in plain English, you know , but you may have more success by circling from the periphery. A excellent print from the source to the same period Eric Gutkind’s the body of God: FIRST STEPS TOWARDS AN ANTI-theology. This book is written in an aphoristic style. Comparing the title of this book Body Like will give you a hint to get started on the path to resolution of Brown. Looking at the philosophical side, Michael Harrington, The Politics funeral GOD astutely questions all the right questions. The best book ever written about Jesus CHRIST OUR Constantin Brunner: the mystical genius of revolt (1921). Here’s an fascinating phrase from the book: “It was there, the blasphemer of God and the calumnies of the most noble, the poor fool malicious, the unfortunate incorrigble, the son of bitch and whore Monger, the swindler, the liar, the secucer. The so-called radical Freudians, in general, as Marcuse, Reich and Roheim, in addition to Brown, are relevant. There is no space for an exegesis of Brown. Instead, I’ll outline the central thought – the importance of the primal scene. For the uninitiated, the primal scene is what mom and dad did in the room. Now, even the disciples of Freud had difficulty seeing the significance of the primal scene and oedipal repeatedly attempted to revise their master. Perhaps the best way to get an inking of its importance in establishing a confrontation between the Joker (the small clown “castrated” performed by Brown) and you. Place yourself in the next scene as a male: You are standing on the periphery of the modern city where you live as we approach the Joker. The Joker starts : “You know, weirder , I made many trips lately and have seen several cities, including this one. I must say that I do not like what I was seeing at all. In each city, residents need clarification locks on their doors and seen to be worried to go out on their own streets at night. One minute they use their bodies as objects of pleasure, and the next day, they sue at the slightest provocation. I see the noise, confusion, chaos and the worst at every turn. I can not reckon of anything that happened in Sodom that has not happened here several times. Tell me when you came here was the city the same as now? “ You answer: “More or less he has been in effect. “ The Joker said: “This city is a tough place to try to earn a living in life is so hectic, there is such a constant influx and DIN, which I reckon sometimes I’m really caught in a nightmare and wakes up any time. This is not the place to try to found a family to raise a child. There is no place for children to play here. You know, although I had many opportunities to unzip my pants and leave my gun here, I just did not feel right about it and so far chose to keep my pants zipped up. But I see by the ring finger that the situation here has apparently not discourage you. You are so lucky after all to look and see what was happening. But I see that no matter what you saw, you were not about to stay away. You had to have it. I confess that I am a fool. But I question you – which is the better man? “ You: (Speechless). Upon resumption of the Joker, “Because I care about the pain I see and you do not particularly care, you end up with a child to carry on your line, and I do not. I question you that man has the greatest like ? “ You speak last, “Before I Punch Out, you have something to say? – A final word?” The Joker does not reflect this and stopped to scan the distant horizon. He then made a finger to highest skyscraper, rising in the night – a source of civic pride known to all residents (and undoubtedly a phallic symbol). The Joker turns around and questions : “How? – That the building there – tell me how this modern tower of Babel was built? No, let me answer the question. It was built by men who at one time or another unzipped their pants. Not one of them has ever been forced to know you. It is after all a voluntary act. Now I question you to reflect for a moment with me what would have happened if not one of those men had already opened their pants at all – not even once. How much of what you see around here now would still be here? I’ll respond – and not a small of that here, including the building, I have to tell. I wondered why these days we place up with perpetual nightmare here we go to get these massive monuments built. If only we could get all the women under control, we could sit around all day and drink beer and play cards. “ You answer: “Leave it to a bone idle ne’er-do-well to -” The Joker interrupts, “What we really need here is a king – The Fool absolute largest we can find with the largest member. I reckon you agree that in May I am the ideal candidate for this job, as I’m absolutely not excellent for anything else. “ The pair burst to another, ready to fight. Let me make the vital point about this tale that the “you” dialogue could also be the father of the Joker’s than anyone else – not a single line of the above would need d ‘ be changed. (In the original tale of Oedipus met his father at the crossroads, the two men had been separated and there was a disguise and did not seem to recognize the other, at least consciously.) If the “you” the tale are the father of the Joker, the Joker would be literally a son of a gun. This would also make the joker on the side of his mother literally an SOB In the dialogue that took place at the Temptation of Christ (Matthew 4:1-11, MK. 2:13, Luke 4:1-13), Jesus rejected Satan’s offer of the kingdoms of this world. Brown says that we are indeed in the kingdom of Satan, I. e. , Hell, especially in huge cities. Jesus will one day accept dominion over earthly kingdoms, but only on the Day of Resurrection when his enemies were transformed into stools. When he returns, he will give the keys of hell and death. This implies a massive restructuring of urban life today – our man-made Hell – will start at that time. To change the subject, if you have an interest in James Joyce, you must examine extracts Brown met in the closure. Joyce was imitating (or he himself is) the insane. The wake is from beginning to end nothing but the Gibbering of a madman. Finnegans Wake is a text Rorschach test, I mean that in its voluminous pages, every phrase you are looking for before opening the book can probably be found. But all Brown has assembled excerpts taken together demonstrate conclusively that Joyce “cracking” of religion, I. e. That all the responses have been established in the wake. In other words, Brown demonstrates that Joyce early pioneer in the same path that Brown found. I will not go beyond honest use, and start quoting the text, then I’ll stop. CHAPTER THREE THE MESSIAH MEDIA: LOOKING FOR JESUS ON TV Let me start with a long list: PURPLE RAIN RAIN COLOR GREEN FAIRY RAIN RAIN RAIN INVISIBLE WIND BLOWS The Reaping The Whirlwind Wind IDIOT WAR Reichian ORGONE RADAR Like THE LONDON CALLING THE Huge BROADCAST RADIO CALL WEIRD PLANET WAVES BLOW THE HORN SOUNDING THE TRUMPET Mind War Fairy Gold BLIGHT FAIRY FAIRY BASEBALL BOWLING THE FAIRY WALL BALLOON back Tumbling Down the Long Goodbye THE Huge SHOOTOUT THE LAST ROUNDUP vials DROPPING THE POWER AND THE GLORY OF FIRES AND FLOODS BRIMSTONE a glance the RAPTURE THE SECRET RAPTURE MARCHING MORONS DROPPING THE Huge ONE THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL The Machine Stops THE FINAL SOLUTION OF BURIAL GROUNDS ELEPHANT, THE WAY OF THE HOLOCAUST bomb on Sodom WITH THE DEVIL lights RADIO SILENCE OUT inactivation of off pulling the plug perforate the DELETE button goes off screen CLOSING TIME OF SIGNATURE JUDGMENT DAY OFF NIGHTFALL The Huge Sleep ”May the gods wish to ruin they first drive mad” I’m going to question you some questions about this list to clarify. At first glance, looking on this list far from exhaustive, it seems that we must leave our umbrellas (or perhaps a degree in meteorology). The first question to question is how these sentences have never met you before? Try to reckon where, if anywhere, one of those phrases can be found. Upon reflection, you may choose that some appear in the literature, some may be from the Bible, but many of them come from the media. The question on the list would be: by combining all these phrases together like I did, so I intend to imply that every sentence is identical or synonymous with every other sentence in the list? No, they are interchangeable in some cases only, but they are interdependent. What, then, the sentences have in common? My answer is that everyone has a direct relationship to a single sentence: MASS PSYCHOSIS That phrase, mass psychosis, you’re probably less likely to be met. The mass psychosis is the real meaning of the fundamentalist doctrine of the secret rapture. Now, I’m sure if we had the opportunity to interview the rock star Prince and questioned him what he meant by Purple Rain it did not respond immediately, “a codeword of mass psychosis. “Similarly, Bob Dylan would not be inclined to say:” When I sing about Idiot Wind, I meant the mass psychosis. “I expect this rather convoluted explanation involving literary metaphors, etc., if I received no response at all. Incidentally, I deliberately mentioned Prince since there has been controversy over its “explicit” when the lyrics of his songs was released. I note that her critics had absolutely nothing to say about the other dimension of his songs, I suggest here – Judgment Day in 1999, etc. Here, I want any discussion on the list and return at the end of this chapter with more comments. Let me return briefly to the general theme of the media. Through the media I mean all the channels through which we receive paid entertainment – cinema, radio, television, etc. Because TV has such a voracious appetite, I will use the concept of media and television, more or less interchangeably . Reckon about how television, to fill each and every hour, engulfed the release of other media, films to theater to rock even the music as music videos. Some of us log on for nearly one third of our lives glued to sets these days. ” As a baby boomer, I gear on television and has made its influence so pervasive. But after decades of exposure we just had, I reckon it is time that we should start a serious examination of the media. Its influence is probably much larger than the literary sources today. Already the sixties we had the McLuhan dictum that the medium is the message. The thought is that the content is not particularly vital , but rather the existence and pervasiveness of the medium itself is perhaps the most significant. Let me look at media criticism in terms of increasing the level of depth. At the lowest level in more catastrophic, the media are perceived as offering a harmless entertainment. But the billions of dollars we throw in the media indicate that much is happening. Slightly better is the far right, evangelical view that television and movies are picture book of the devil and rock music is devil’s music. This approach has the advantage of being factually right , but has fallen increasingly on hard times, but all the hard-liners have capitulated and joined in the cacophony of the media themselves. Massive blocks of airtime radio and cable networks are devoted to the sale of Jesus sandwiched between advertisements for soap and cars. A small more discerning, is the thought that television is a boob tube and rock trash is subversive, and exposure to one or two son string May your brain permanently. Is the ultimate goal of producing a race of Mindless, impious giant zombie (the return of “men of renown” of Genesis described by Brown at closing)? This effect keeps us mesmerized by the hour after hour, the flickering images? Softies Why so many of us – practically frozen into stone? What we really look? The answer from Norman O. Brown is that we are witnessing the Primal reproduce Oedipal stage night after night in the endless repetition with slight variations. You object, “I beg your pardon. I watched a game show followed by a sitcom last night.” What we’re really here is to pay artists to place on the only show that we want to see. Finally, at the highest level of criticism, we also simultaneously obtain the final verdict on the media. We follow Jesus get crucified night after night in every detail, even though we may not be aware of it. After decades of this, I reckon it may catch up someday. In other words, the horrific violence and evil we see represented in the media in May futures come to us in real life. Despite the blanket condemnation of the last paragraph, I’ll turn around and list of films. Ideally, you should stay away. But the player will come for us all, whether or not we individually may or may not have looked. In the meantime, perhaps we can seize the opportunity to explore the obvious and subtle techniques employed. The primary genre to keep an eye on science fiction. As Susan Sontag said in the sixties, is the kind of the Apocalypse and the massive destruction. Typically, as in the prototype FRANKENSTEIN (1932), a man attempts to usurp the prerogatives of God (technically blasphemy) and harvest madness and disaster. These parables are strictly moral, where retribution is swift and sure. Look, for example, CRAZY RAY René Clair’s LA (1923) from the infancy of the industry. Elements that would become cliches for decades with their incessant repetition were already present. A mad scientist invents a machine-ray, he reconstructs the interior of the Eiffel Tower that transforms the inhabitants of Paris in stone. The aircraft initially elusive ray of land, and passengers are surprised when they land. An fascinating principle of criticism is to give special attention to the message of film titles.
